We are really excited to announce that in July 2024 St Davids achieved the Plastic Free Community Award! This was confirmed by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) after around 2 years of work locally between EcoDewi, St Davids City Council, local businesses, organisations and groups, and local residents.
Whilst a few businesses have signed up to become Plastic Free Champions (Businesses), the following have achieved the award which has been a key factor in the city receiving the community award. These are:
And as well as these amazing businesses who have had to work really hard to demonstrate what they have done to earn the award, we are really grateful to the following local organisations, clubs, faith groups and groups who have signed up as Plastic Free Allies pledging to reduce their usage of single-use items. In particular we want to highlight the pupils & staff of Non Campus, Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi, who have been formally accredited as a Plastic Free School by SAS.
We must also say a massive thank you to St Davids City Council who immediately agreed to a motion to support the project when we asked. It is vital to have the support of the local council for this award and we’re pleased to be collaborating with them.
Another thank you is to the volunteers who have joined our small Steering Group which meets occasionally to help drive the project, looking at new organisations and businesses to approach, and also sharing tips and advice with each other. You know who you are and thank you. We’d welcome anyone interested in joining this team so just get in contact.
And our final thanks goes to everyone who has attended one of our beach cleans or other events, talks or film nights when we have been highlighting this project and the reasons for reducing single-use plastic and rubbish. This is a community project and without you it wouldn’t have begun.
We look forward to continuing the work in St Davids but also working towards the award in Solva and Llanrhian wards too!
