We aim to reduce as much Single-Use Plastic as possible from the St Davids Peninsula and work with all elements of communities to achieve this together to the better of our environment and future generations.

EcoDewi is working with Surfers Against Sewage and has signed up to their Plastic Free Communities scheme which encourages communities to work towards become an accredited Plastic Free Community.

Our initial goal here is simple:

“for Solva, St Davids and Llanhrian communities to be official Plastic Free Communities”

However, we can only do this with community support. This means getting the support and involvement of community councils, local businesses, organisations like schools, community groups and churches, and of course residents and visitors.

Of course, communities won’t be free of all plastics and we acknowledge that there are many examples where plastics are currently required in society, especially in industries like medical care. Our focus is single-use items where there are clear alternatives.

We should also add though that we don’t see this project ending once accreditation has been received. Far from it! Our vision here is to continue to encourage and support all businesses, organisations, residents and visitors to rid themselves of single-use plastic and to find suitable alternatives. This will mean less litter, less plastic in our oceans, less demand so less production, and therefore less carbon emissions. Let’s aim to be an example of how it should be done!

For now, there are 5 objectives for each area to achieve in order to gain the accreditation. Get in contact if you want to know more info about any of these objectives.

We hope lots of people will want to get involved and if you live in or near one of the areas below and want to know more or to get involved, click on one of the regions below.

Keep an eye on our social media channels for regular updates on the project and simply get in contact if you want to be involved, know more. Email: hello@ecodewi.org.uk

Plastic Free St Davids Update – August 2024

We are really excited to announce that in July 2024 St Davids achieved the Plastic Free Community Award! This was confirmed by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) after around 2 years of work locally between EcoDewi, St Davids City Council, local businesses, organisations and groups, and local residents.

Whilst a few businesses have signed up to become Plastic Free Champions (Businesses), the following have achieved the award which has been a key factor in the city receiving the community award.  These are:

And as well as these amazing businesses who have had to work really hard to demonstrate what they have done to earn the award, we are really grateful to the following local organisations, clubs, faith groups and groups who have signed up as Plastic Free Allies pledging to reduce their usage of single-use items. In particular we want to highlight the pupils & staff of Non Campus, Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi, who have been formally accredited as a Plastic Free School by SAS.

We must also say a massive thank you to St Davids City Council who immediately agreed to a motion to support the project when we asked. It is vital to have the support of the local council for this award and we’re pleased to be collaborating with them.

Another thank you is to the volunteers who have joined our small Steering Group which meets occasionally to help drive the project, looking at new organisations and businesses to approach, and also sharing tips and advice with each other.  You know who you are and thank you.  We’d welcome anyone interested in joining this team so just get in contact.

And our final thanks goes to everyone who has attended one of our beach cleans or other events, talks or film nights when we have been highlighting this project and the reasons for reducing single-use plastic and rubbish.  This is a community project and without you it wouldn’t have begun.

We look forward to continuing the work in St Davids but also working towards the award in Solva and Llanrhian wards too!
