Following concerns highlighted with us by residents about local beaches possibly experiencing the same dreadful litter issues that other UK and local beaches (e.g. Broadhaven) having experienced as the COVID-19 lockdown has been eased, we have started a new project called Peninsula Beach Stewards.  EcoDewi, working with Sam Minas and Becky Lloyd amongst others, will very shortly be recruiting volunteers to act as beach stewards down at Whitesands Beach and Newgale Beach.  The volunteers will be there, during the summer holiday afternoons, to support both the local community and visitors, encouraging them in a friendly and polite manner to take litter home with them or use the available bins. The project which Pembrokeshire County Council are very excited and supportive of, having spoken to the Leisure Services Manager and also Mark Bonds of the EcoChampion scheme, is operating in collaboration Surfers Against Sewage and we have been liaising with other relevant stakeholders and key organisations such as PAVSKeep Wales Tidy, Pembrokeshire Coastal ForumSt. David’s City CouncilNolton & Roch Community Council, and local community groups and businesses such as the Newgale Wombles litter pickers, New Surf shop and Whitesands Beach Cafe.

Time is against us as the lockdown measures are relaxed and visitors start to arrive and use our local beaches which is great, but we are keen to ensure these wonderful local assets are looked after for both residents and wildlife.  We believe that the majority of visitors will automatically take litter home or bin it however we feel that a friendly, visible presence of our beach stewards, giving out a bag where necessary or pointing people towards the bins or even just being seen litter picking, might just help ensure very little is left behind.  We will of course be ensuring safety precautions are taken in line with local authority and national advice during the COVID-19 crisis and volunteers will receive training and monitoring.
